Who is Maura, really?
Here’s the accusation that started the accusation-bandwagon against the Generals: “…Deborah banished Maura to a shed in the backyard. Maura lived there for months.”1
Ok. That’s what we’ve heard.
Now, do you think it’s fair to call out the lynch mob? Or should we verify that what Maura said actually happened?
It’s always been assumed to be true. Assumed. If all we’re doing is assuming, it should be equally assumed that it is not true. Evidence should be the deciding factor, not only what someone says, especially when there’s a lot of people who were also there, saying the opposite!
Regarding the accuser, a real investigator should ask,
Who is Maura? What type of person is she? What’s her past? Is there evidence to back up her story? Is there evidence that contradicts her story? Is there a likely reason she would lie for any reason, like offended pride, bitterness, jealousy, or because she was influenced by an outside source? What’s the WHOLE story?
There’s always a background. There’s always the untold personal history that can reveal character and motive. So, how did Maura come into the picture? WHO IS THIS MAURA, REALLY?
To begin, it makes sense to ask those who knew her best.
Deborah knew Maura personally since 1970 when Maura was in a training program for unwed mothers. Maura trained at the hospital where Deborah’s brother was dying of cancer. In illuminating detail, Deborah describes Maura’s character during that time and onward, in her well-written eyewitness disclosure called “X Street Files to the Present, or, A Timeline-Essay covering 1970 to 2004.” I really don’t need to echo all the details of her testimony here, so please follow this LINK to read Deborah’s own words.
Deborah and many other eyewitnesses, including Maura’s family members, have described Maura as manipulative, falsely humble and untrustworthy. Maura’s pre-Christian life is conveyed as morally dark, with severe promiscuity; while her Christian life was said to show very little transformation. Her family and Christian brethren sadly report that she was always saying “I’m sorry” yet never changing.

Maura was not only the accuser, but quickly became instigator and aggressor. At times, she claimed she was “abused” for 10 weeks, sometimes she said six months. But it’s most interesting to look back at the last 36 YEARS that she has pursued, attacked and ABUSED Deborah, hunting her down like an obsessed psychopath. I wonder why so many people can’t see this behavior as ABUSIVE?
Deborah didn’t chase Maura around the country, trying to control her, smear her in the media or attempt to destroy her way of life. Deborah didn’t set out to kidnap her and deprogram her or convince her to rejoin the ministry. On the other hand, I personally saw Deborah pray for Maura, more than once, and fast for her, that God would have mercy on her and that she would stop lying.
It’s Maura whose actions demonstrate abuse.
Maura’s Claims, the Media, and Her Contradictions

Records show Maura’s court declaration was filed on January 12, 1989, in the Superior Court of CA, County of Sacramento. Therein she boldly stated, on page 11, “For 2½ months we were forced to live in the shed; we were only given 6 stale white bread peanut-butter sandwiches per day — nothing else.” So she testified under oath that she was FORCED into physical confinement in a shed.
Reporters over the years echoed this accusation. For example, an article by Jan Held in the Thursday, May 11, 1989 issue of The Biggs News Butte County Reporter expressed the following: “[Maura], 41, stated in her suit she was imprisoned by ACMTC in January of 1987 and forced to live in a shed.” Note the word “imprisoned”! Melinda Welsh, who wrote a lengthy article in a 1989 issue of the Sacramento News & Review, reported that “According to the lawsuit…the organization [ACMTC] … forced her [Maura] … and another banished sect member to move for 10 weeks into a 5-by-12-foot wooden shed, in which they could not stand upright.”
However, on the September 21, 2006 (S5-E4) episode of the Dr. Phil Show, Maura publicly stated, “The door was not locked, I could have left, but that’s how afraid I was.”2 Watch her say it for yourself, HERE.
For years, Maura never corrected any reporters who published the physically “locked up” version. Why? How did it go from “forced” or “imprisoned” to “I could have left”? Clearly, “I could have left” is NOT in line with her original testimony under oath, or what she had been telling everyone since 1989! Readers, that’s a big deal.
It gets even more complicated. Here’s a sample:
— On page 8 of her court testimony, she admits that there were times when they were allowed “to use the toilet in the chop shop.” Yet on the Dr. Phil show, cited above, she argued that she was not allowed to use the bathroom for 6 months.
— Also on page 8 of her court document, she goes into great detail about how she had to work, which means she had to leave the shed, during her 6-month/10-week so-called “confinement” in the shed.
— Page 11 of her testimony really complicates her captivity when she stated under oath that “We had to get permission to leave camp and we were told to hurry back.” How do we make sense of that? She not only left her confinement at times, but even left the property altogether!

Questions, Questions!
What a world of questions this opens up! What a mess of contradictions we have to wade through! What a volume of information withheld from the public!
Why did Maura claim that she was not a physical captive but only a captive of “fear”? Perhaps she really was fearful – of being caught in her lies. Maybe Maura was afraid someone would read the testimonies we’d published and call her out on her lies? Very possibly, she was deeply afraid that someone would bring to light her perjury, then pursue a counter lawsuit!
Stepping Back Further: The Rebuke That Was Rejected
Digging a little deeper, we travel back before this whole lawsuit business, before the “shed,” before Maura lost her leadership role and position of influence. Many of you may not know that she held such a position. You also may not know why she lost it.
Maura was a foundational member of the ministry. Her and her husband were the first two to team up with James and Deborah in Sacramento, before there was an ACMTC. In time, as God blessed them, the ministry grew, took structure, and they were dealing with many lost souls. As a foundational member, Maura was in a position of influence. But Deborah’s personal testimony explains how reports were coming in that Maura was seducing young men, and worse.3
Prayerfully, the Generals had to confront Maura.
Biblical Rebuke
You may not like the following Scriptures, but they are in the Bible. Christian or not, you cannot deny they’re in there – in the New Testament, no less!
– Titus 3:10-11. “Reject a divisive man after the first and second admonition, knowing that such a person is warped and sinning, being self-condemned.”4
– 1 Corinthians 5:1,4,5,9-11. “It is actually reported [that there is] sexual immorality among you … In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
…I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. Yet [I] certainly [did] not [mean] with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner – not even to eat with such a person.”5
– 1 Timothy 5:20. “Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear.”6
Sexual sins ruin a soul’s relationship with God. Sexual prowlers tragically ruin their victims. That’s why the Bible condemns sexual sins from beginning to end. “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body” (1 Corinthians 6:18). Remember the 10 commandments: “Thou shalt not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14). And Galatians declares, “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, …” (Galatians 5:19-21). More emphatically, the Holy Spirit, through the Apostle Peter, gives a scathing rebuke to those in authority positions who commit sexual sins: “[God] is especially hard on those who follow their own twisted sexual desire, and who despise authority. …They commit adultery with their eyes, and their desire for sin is never satisfied. They lure unstable people into sin, and they are well trained in greed. They live under God’s curse” (2 Peter 2:10,14).8
As reported, Maura was in a position of influence in the ministry, abusing that position. The Generals could do nothing BUT confront her. It was Biblically done. It was the right thing to do. They removed her from her position of authority and explained to her why.
The Generals and Maura’s own former husband have always been transparent that Maura was committing real physical adultery, not just “spiritual adultery” as some have claimed.3 And when her Christian leaders did rebuke her, Maura didn’t plead that it wasn’t so. That’s VERY telling if you ask me! It’s also very telling to note that because of her physical promiscuity, her husband decided to separate from her.6
By Maura’s own words, she knew she was guilty and accepted her demotion. In a series of handwritten letters (which the Generals preserved), Maura openly confessed that she was disobeying God and the dissolution of her marriage was her fault. She also expressed that God was dealing with her over her disobedience. Her words! No blame towards the Generals or anyone else. Freely offered confessions! You want actual documented evidence, not just “so-and-so says so”? Read all her own handwritten letters HERE.
Correction Is a Part of Life, But Often Ugly
Christian leaders are commanded in the Bible to correct sinning members, however, the Bible doesn’t promise that every man or woman will accept their rebuke. That’s where it gets complicated. Many men and women just get offended, and then lash back in anger.
Consider a lawyer who has to fire a very lazy secretary, or worse, the CEO of a Law Firm who must fire an executive for embezzling and sleeping around with young female interns. Dealing with disobedience is ugly no matter what. Nonetheless, leaders in every walk of life have to confront misbehavior. Leave it be and something worse could happen.
A Christian leader who doesn’t correct sin in their congregation is accused of not looking out for people and not being responsible. A Christian leader who DOES correct sin is accused of being mean, unloving, judgmental, oppressive and dictatorial. LOSE-LOSE!
That’s how a rebuke morphed into vicious accusations.
As readers and listeners, we need to be careful we don’t hate the ones who have the difficult responsibility of confronting employees, students, or ministry workers who are causing problems in their line of work. Leaders have a difficult enough job as it is. We don’t need to make it harder by automatically blaming them just because the offended person is blaming them. What’s scary is that if we blame and hate without any proof, we could end up hating the actual victims, while siding with the real abuser.
