“Between the iron gates of fate,
The seeds of time were sown,
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known;
Knowledge is a deadly friend when no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools”
– Epitaph, 1969
Both the Psalms and Proverbs write about the “fool:” “The fool had said in his heart, ‘There is no God’…” (Psalms 14:1);
“To do mischief is like sport to a fool, but a man of understanding has wisdom.” (Proverbs 10:23);
“The way of a fool is right I his own eyes… A fool’s wrath is presently known, but a prudent man covers shame” (Proverbs 12:15, 16);
“Wisdom is too high for a fool; he does not open his mouth in the gate” (Proverbs 24:7);
“The thought of foolishness is sin, and the scorner is an abomination to men” (Proverbs 24:9).
“The END of life is summed up in one word – FOOL,” writes one Christian author and professor. What this professor meant of course was that of a non-Christian.
Despite all those who disagree, the underlying message of the futility of life is irresistible (see Ecclesiastes which shows humanity’s fruitless pursuit of contentment: life is only found in right relationship with one’s creator). Of course man too often conceals his foolishness behind a facade of self-assurance. But hubris causes the masses to ignore what the wisdom of the Bible says, hence, intellectual pasturing murders the truth.
But not all are fools. There is a growing hunger to KNOW the TRUTH. These seekers are cognizant of the war between human and Divine… this war cuts across tie, generations, and cultures.
History has produced some very brilliant people, many that were once Christian but later became fools! F.W. (1844-1900). If there is one word to sum up Nietzsche and his life, it would be FOOL!
His father was a pastor, both of his grandfathers were Christian ministers. He died a fool, yet in his book Ecce Homo (published after his death) he wrote: “I have a terrible fear that one day I shall be pronounced ‘holy’.”
Paul, the educated Jewish pharisee (who was first called Saul), wrote: “For to those who are perishing, the preaching of the cross is foolishness…” (1 Corinthians 1:18).
