In an age of quick-fix, processed, packaged, and sold in abundance food, do we really and truly desire “daily bread?”
Jesus said in John 6:48-51 that He was the “Bread of Life,” the “Living Bread.” He went on to imply that His flesh was that Bread, “For My flesh is food indeed…,” v. 55 “… the Bread/food which came down from heaven,” v. 58
-Lord’s Prayer-
Mt. 6:9-13 is Jesus’ prayer. Verse 11 mentions “daily bread,” this can be either natural or spiritual bread.
To pray Jesus’ prayer today is certainly at odds with contemporary Western values and at odds with much of today’s Church.
These 7 petitions in Jesus’ prayer may have been relevant in His day, but only part relevant for today. One minister once wrote: “’Thy Kingdom come’ is strange to pray while living in a country that long ago rejected monarchy in favor of popular sovereignty.” He went on to say that “it is dissonant to confess ‘Thy will be done’ in an age that celebrates autonomy & self-determination.”
In a country like America, a humanistic woke culture of grand social/political affluence, a nation who prides itself on supremacy, ostentatious behavior, hubris pride, rhapsodies of every kind, a deludherin tongue, and consumed with monomania, Jesus’ prayer seems archaic! Well, it is rather old but eternal. We live in a nation that has become “post-Christian” in favor of “Political Correctness and Wokeism” Where preservation of the satanic has preeminence over the preservation of the saintly. Desire of the forbidden overrides the desire for the divine.
The Lord’s simple prayer challenges our notions of what is truly desirable; this is precisely why America desperately needs it.
IF we had to turn in a (spiritual) report card, would we have A’s or F’s? Would we find relevance and alacrity, i.e., quick willingness, to pray Jesus’ prayer?
Did Jesus practice what He preached? When we pray, “Our Father in heaven,” this puts us into the realm of intimacy, not just mere words. Jesus always addressed His Father as “Father.” While millions may pray this daily, how many really mean it? Orthodox – Roman Catholic -Protestant? In this prayer we can turn Words into “living Bread” that feeds our soul/spirit man.
We all need to be delivered from “the evil one” -v.13- daily.
