There have always been those who have worked within systems who have separated themselves from systems forming up yet another system. Such were and are those who work intel. Such are those who are ex CIA/FBI agents.
Back when the FBI was formed up in order to watch/spy upon those who were thought to be communists, a “Black List” was kept by those both inside-the-system and by those outside-the-system. The insiders operated within the law: the outsiders operated outside normal intelligence (Intel) channels.
The “spy” game was secret, as it is today. Before Islamic terrorism, commies were suspected of subversion and were conduits for funds used to fiance other forms of terrorism.
The agents who worked outside normal intel channels used the “smear and clear” tactic: smear the target, i.e. demonize/vilify him or her or them by putting them on the Black List and circulate it nationally. When the target or targets were sorely opprobriumed (disgraced publicly), they were given the choice of paying large sums of money to the intel agents and having their name or names cleared, or be turned over to the FBI. The rogue agents were able to work within and without the Intel community – a win win.
During the “Red Scare” that flourished during the 1950’s in the US there were hundreds of top officials and low officials accused of being RED! The ones with $$ got cleared; the poorer ones went on trial and were jailed. Even if a suspect was not RED they paid to have their name taken off the BL. This stuff flourished under Joseph McCarthy and FBI Chief Edger Hoover. The communist party USA was under constant surveillance. No one was safe from the “I Spy” agents out to make a quick buck. From the diminutive banker to the damned bum, all were suspect during the Red Scare. Even agents within the Intel community were sometimes singled out because of jealousy within systems.
Now, with the whole world “hooked up” to the internet, spying has gone Cyber. Facebook currently is under investigation for shady practices. Russia and China have become the “All Seeing EYES” that gather info on individuals and business’ of every sort.
Tech/Intel has created a monster that is brilliant yet barbaric. Clandestine ops are not limited to foreign nations, they are in your home/office etc. Whenever you go to your computer and stare at the screen; eyes and ears are on the other side watching and listening to you. Be safe.
